Museum of the Souls in Purgatory

Encarnacion de Díaz

Next to the beautiful Panteón del Señor de las Misericordia, at the county seat, there’s a place only for braves—the Museo de las Ánimas (Museum of the Souls in Purgatory), the only Jalisco place that exhibits mummies.

After several bodies were exhumed in 1998 discovering they were mummified, knowing that they would cause a lot of curiosity, the museum was built and opened in 2003. It explores death from different perspectives such as medicine, religion, anthropology, history and art.

This is how these 24 bodies amaze young and old due to their great state of conservation. Among the most popular mummies is the one that so far is the world’s smallest: a five months of gestation fetus only 10 cm tall and more than 300 years old; in addition to the “Viejito en el Costal” (The Sack Man), because he reminds a legend’s character: child-snatcher, and that of “Lorenza”, a woman murdered by her lover.

Throughout five rooms you’ll travel through time between prehispanic crafts, viceregal sacred art, photographs, paintings and clothing from Independence and Revolution times.

It is said that before entering, most visitors ask for the eternal rest of the souls that inhabit the cemetery. That, according to museum staff, causes them to be present through noises, voices and they swear they have even seen a kid’s silhouette in the office area. Do you believe them? Dare to find out for yourself!
