“La Chona” Railway Station

Encarnacion de Díaz

One of the favorite places for those visiting Encarnación de Díaz is its railway station—it feels like a time’s leap to the past. It was built in 1883 by the Central Mexican Railroad company for promoting the municipality's economic bonanza based on agriculture and livestock.

Today it’s so well preserved that it has even been set for films such as Arturo Ripstein’s Los recuerdos del porvenir. But, let us remember that it was also the location of an quite important battle for this town and even Jalisco state, the Combate de Encarnación (Encarnación Battle)—in which more than a hundred agraristas lost their lives when they were confused as Cristeros. This site continues to welcome all the railways that pass by.

After taking the best pics at the station, you’ll find another site worth visiting two kilometers ahead—the San Pedro Dam, which has an overlook that offers one of the most beautiful Encarnación de Díaz views.

Let yourself be hypnotized by the waterfall sound, the lagoon formed on the lilies covered top, the mountains that seem to reach the region’s bluest skies and the waterfall only visible when floodgates are opened in the rainy season.
