Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque

Zempoala

The most important hydraulic engineering work in the New Spain Viceroyalty is located just 10 kilometers from Zempoala and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015.

The 16th-century system was devised to transport drinking water from the springs of the Tecajete hill to nearby towns, especially Otumba and Zempoala.

The Franciscan priest Francisco de Tembleque was in charge of the design and construction. The work has a 48 kilometers total length and its most prominent part is the so-called Arquería Mayor or Arquería Monumental de Tepeyahualco: 68 semicircular arches that total 904 meters long and almost 39 meters high.
