Camino Real Tierra Adentro Travel Route

Tepeji del Río de Ocampo

This road, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, was during the Colony and up to the XIX century, the most important road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The road included the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Durango and Chihuahua in the Mexican Republic, and New Mexico in the United States. Its function was the transportation of minerals like silver or mercury.

Tepeji is located between two places that are part of this road and that were important points for the trade and culture: El Puente de la Colmena and the Ex Hacienda de la Cañada, as well as the Ex-Convent of San Francisco and its bridge.

La Cañada keeps still some of its main elements. It used to work, first, in the XVI century for the raising of cattle and then it became a hall for social gatherings. You can still visit it, the same goes for the Ex Hacienda of Caltengo, which is located in the Camino Real and nowadays works as a place for parties and celebrations

As an additional fact, at Caltengo, Melchor Ocampo was caught and killed and then he was hanged from a tree that is still located inside the Ex Hacienda.
