You’ll find one of the most impressive religious sites in the region less than 30 minutes from Silao—the Santuario de Cristo Rey that crowns Cerro del Cubilete top at 2,259 meters high.
Besides offering unequalled panoramic views, the sanctuary houses a bronze-made Christ statue 20 meters high and 80 tons in weight.
In the original building, the Christ, destroyed during the Cristero war, was much smaller. Later, Nicolás Mariscal was in charge of the worldwide known recent version.
His vision of a large three-tiered circular platform was inaugurated in 1950, quickly establishing as one of Mexican most visited sanctuaries, only after the Basilica of Guadalupe and Nuestra Señora of San Juan de los Lagos.
Below the religious image base is the Museo Cristero that shows several pieces of art, historical and audiovisual documents.
