Temple of San Agustín

Salamanca

This magnificent baroque work was begun in 1644 and was completed at the end of 1706. Founded by Augustinians, houses 11 Churrigueresque altarpieces that will dazzle you, since gold is present in all its expression. Details, for small as they may seem, were created with almost divine precision.

Entering the temple is like entering a gold mine where the shapes appear irregular from afar, but when you approach you realize so laborious work that it becomes a true “revelation”. Within the enclosure there isn’t a wasted space—every inch is a finding. From domes to cherubs vestments neither there is a single brushstroke nor chiseled that hasn’t been placed without a purpose.

Other spaces such as the sacristy preserve furniture beyond the extraordinary, fascinating oil paintings and images over three centuries old, as well as a solid octagonal table held in the center as if it were floating and an Augustinian heart carved in wood and decorated with Biblical passages.
