La Valenciana Mine

Guanajuato

The city of Guanajuato and its adjacent mines were declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1988. One of these silversmith vestiges is open to the public. La Valenciana is a wealthy mine, that made the construction of churches and mansions in the surrounding areas possible.

Located in the north of Guanajuato capital, La Valenciana has a rich silver deposit that began its exploitation in the 16th century. There were many decades of bonanza, but the Revolution and a workers' strike caused its production to drop, until it was handed over to section 4 of the National Union of Mining, Metallurgical and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic, who constituted the Sociedad Cooperativa Minero Metalúrgica Santa Fe de Guanajuato.

Today, this cooperative venture is one that continues to exploit the mine La Valencia by taking tourists to tour the facilities. You can still see the shaft that carries the silver shipments, extracted from 530 meters deep.

At the top was built the church of San Cayetano, whose façade is carved in a pink quarry and inside preserves an altarpiece covered in a golden leaf, a pulpit carved in precious woods and ivory inlays and a sacristy with paintings from the 19th century.
