José Alfredo Jiménez Museum

Dolores Hidalgo

The voice of Mexico
The house of this singer-songwriter, native to Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, has been turned into a museum, which is now home to memorabilia such as records, sombreros, charro suits and lyrics written in his very own handwriting. This museum, which has been open for just over a decade, offers you a visually-narrated chronology of Mexican singer-songwriter life, spread over nine rooms, each one named after one of his most representative songs.

Throughout these rooms you can find out about aspects of his childhood, how his studies were interrupted and how he became interested in music; his first performances; how he met his first wife, Paloma Gálvez, the undeniable muse for his most touching songs; his prolific career appearing on monumental stages; and even his dramatic rise to success.

The last three rooms illustrate the genius decline, who suffered from alcoholism, and how this led to his premature death. There’s also a reminder of his last live performance and the rise of the legend, whose heartfelt lyrics and melancholic chords made an impact on Mexico’s musical and cultural archives, turning him into an idol.
