José Alfredo Jiménez grave

Dolores Hidalgo

Behind the solid entrance, which has a small cross at the top, you can see a gate which leads to what’s perhaps one of the most visited municipal cemeteries in the state. A series of white tombstones and small chapels line the way to a mausoleum which is unlike everything else you will see there. You will hear the sound of a mariachi getting closer and closer, thus letting you know you have reached José Alfredo Jiménez’s grave.

A long, brightly-colored sarape shaped like a snake, leads to a huge charro sombrero which shades the eternal resting place of “El Rey”, as he was also known. This site, which seems to be constantly visited by fans and travelers from all over the world, offers a tribute which will give you goosebumps.

Despite the successful life he lived, José Alfredo’s remained modest; he therefore requested that his resting place be nothing more than a simple tombstone, a request which was granted. However, the nation, and those dearest to him, asked for a tribute to be made to him, in form of a gift to him after his death, which would also help visitors find his resting place. To mark the 25th anniversary of his death therefore, the striking mausoleum you can visit today was installed.
