Taxhimay Dam

Villa del Carbón

Located just 23 kilometers (14 mi) from the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Villa del Carbón, the Taxhimay Dam is one of the most popular natural attractions in the Estado de México. In addition to enjoying its natural beauty, travelers can expect to take pleasure in a quiet tour accompanied only by the countryside's fauna, such as cows and sheep, while learning about the history of Taxhimay Hacienda.

The Taxhimay Hacienda was flooded in 1931, along with the town of San Luis de las Peras, which had been evacuated in order to give way to the Taxhimay Dam. The dome of the former hacienda is visible when you visit the dam via boat or yacht tour, both of which are available.

If you're an aquatic sports enthusiast, be sure to rent a water bicycle or a kayak in order to get closer to the dome. You can also ride horses and mountain bikes in the landscape surrounding the dam.

Be sure to tour the trout farms in the area and to enjoy this local product as prepared by the local restaurants. This culinary experience is, without a doubt, a must. Remember to order a bit of rompope (eggnog) or, if such is your preference, a mouthwatering barbacoa (meat slow-cooked over an open fire or in a hole dug in the ground).
