Sanctuary Virgin of the Little Stone

Jilotepec

Atop of the Cerrito or Cerro Xhidenxi, in the Villa of Canalejas community, just 10 kilometers from the Municipality, you will find the Church of the Virgin of the Little Stone. Here the Virgin of Guadalupe is worshiped.

As the legend goes, in 1868 a laborer called Juan Nolasco found while he was working, a stone with the image of the Virgin engraved on it. Another version tells that the money that was needed for the construction of the church was found on a mule that was lost in that spot.

The worship to the Virgin of The Little Stone grew little by little, so at the end of the XIX century the priest Cesareo de Jesus Mondragon decided to build a sanctuary for the Virgin. The first stone of the building was placed in December 1897 and the whole construction was over by 1981.

This sanctuary was designed in a neo-Gothic style, it was built in pink and blue quarry, it has two towers, big stained glasses and a beautiful facade with ogive and rosettes.

Inside the building you will see the stone that Juan Nolasco found. You can go up to the sanctuary through a stony road surrounded by trees; this is a charming place that has become an important pilgrimage destination.
