Coatepec Harinas

Estado de México

El Nevado de Toluca is one of the main natural attractions of the State of Mexico, an entity surrounded by small cities and towns full of historical vestiges, traditions, and many areas to spend the day outdoors. On the skirts of this volcano -very much visited for its landscapes and panoramas- are located communities like Coatepec Harinas.

Coatepec Harinas is located on the skirts of the Xinantecátl volcano -as El Nevado de Toluca- in the south of the State of Mexico, bordering the municipalities of Zinacantepec, Toluca, Temascaltepec, Texcaltitlán, Almoloya de Alquisiras, Ixtapan de la Sal, Zacualpan and Villa Guerrero, which are surrounded by nature.

By highway, Coatepec Harinas is located one hour and a half from Toluca, State of Mexico; 1 hour and 50 minutes from Taxco, Guerrero; 2 hours and 10 minutes from Mexico City and 2 hours and 20 minutes from Cuernavaca, Morelos.

The climate in Coatepec Harinas is humid and temperate because of the great amount of vegetation surrounding the town, its average temperature is 19º C ( 66º F) and from December to February temperatures usually drop, more when the tip of the volcano is snowed over.

The name of Coatepec is of Nahuatl origin and in English means “On the hill of snakes”; the word “Harinas” (Flour) was added after the manufacture of this product became an important part of its economy during the 19th century.

Coatepec was a place inhabited by the Matlatzincas, who were dedicated to the cultivation of corn and beans, besides manufacturing textiles that, to this day, are still part of the inhabitants' most daily activities.

Many of the flowers we buy in the market are grown in the greenhouses of this town.
