Old Salt Factory

Viesca

The company Sulfatos de Viesca was founded in 1952 to extract the sodium sulfate used in the paper industry. Over time, the factory grew and expanded its technology to produce table salt or sodium chloride. Thus, it came to employ some 400 people at its plant, located a few kilometres from Viesca.

But in the 1980s, a sea salt deposit was discovered that was very easy to extract, which made costs cheaper and the technology used in Viesca was no longer competitive. In addition, the railway stopped passing through Viesca, leaving the factory without the necessary supplies, so that in 1990 it closed its doors.

The abandoned site, with its white salt flats and ruined buildings, offers a very unique landscape for lovers of photography and hunters of exceptional spots.
