Dunas de Yeso (Gypsum Dunes)

Cuatro Ciénegas

Sand so white that you could almost mistake it for snow, that is what awaits you when you arrive at the gypsum dunes within Cuatro Cienegas. This characteristic is due to the fact that millions of years ago, the waters of the Tethys Sea reached this side of the world, mixing with the silicon and hydrated calcium sulfate that were abundant in this territory.

When all that ocean evaporated, these saline rocks resulted. In the world there are only four regions with these characteristics, one of them is this, proudly Mexican.

Explore the surroundings while you get lost observing the different fossil and geological remains that will be discovered before your eyes or seeing the forms that the wind leaves in its path in the white sand until you reach the most famous dune due to its height of 12 meters, better known as “El Castillo”.

These are vestiges of times as remote as the beginning of life itself. They shine spectacularly in the moonlight due to the amount of fossilized snail crystals that are embedded in these rock formations, almost as if they were stars in a new whitish sky vault.

If your thing is photography, you can also go to the marble mine that is five minutes from there. Despite being abandoned, it is a totally instagrammable place because the walls that make it up as well as giant blocks are made with this material, making them stand out from all this desert environment and contrast beautifully with the blue of the sky.
