Raramuris and Missions

Creel

It would be impossible to tell Chihuahua’s story without talking about the missions, which were the evangelization centers of the different religious orders established in the state during the Colonial period.

Just in Chihuahua there are 168 missions. Just eight kilometers (5 miles) from Creel is found San Ignacio mission, settled in San Ignacio de Arareko. There, Raramuris meet on Sundays.

This 18th century construction houses that-time vases and dishes, among other items. Open wide eyes because in one of its facades there’s a mural dedicated to endemic Mexican cactus “peyote”, considered a hallucinogen.

In this mission, Raramuris hold a party honoring that cactus. The ceremony begins by preparing “tonari”, a beef, potato and pumpkins stew. Peyote is added and then, the community tastes it. The celebration lasts all night and participants dance and eat.

The “Valle de Arareko” (Arareko Valley) is one of the areas inhabited by Rarámuri community, so here you can learn more about this ethnic group that practice running as one of its many talents; they are good at running long distances along the winding roads of the Sierra. A famous Raramuri runner is the ultra marathoner Lorena Ramírez.
