Chihuahua Cathedral

Chihuahua

During your visit to Chihuahua’s Historical Center, be sure to take a few minutes to explore the Cathedral. It took almost a century to complete the construction, which displays meticulous details in the way it was decorated, from the Baroque-style sandstone facade, to the Rococo-style wood carvings found within. Highlights inside the cathedral include the solid, elegant ivory-colored pillars, which support arches that are repeated from the entrance all the way to the altar.

If you stand right in the entrance and face left, you will see the Cristo de Mapimí on his golden altar, protected by a gate which manages not to overshadow its splendor. The highly realistic size and detail of this representation of Christ have been a focal point of admiration expressed by churchgoers and tourists alike, who consider this figure to be a truly captivating work of sacred art.

The central dome acts as source of light for the cathedral, allowing sunlight to filter inside pleasantly, highlighting the religious statues which can be seen, both on the altar and at either side of the building, where other paintings decorate each space.

Another attraction is the spectacular organ, imported from Germany, which is still used. If you visit on a Sunday or on a mass day, you will be able to hear the powerful sound of the organ which sends a vibration right through you, from the word go. This instrument is considered one of the very best in the country. Take the opportunity to visit the underground area where you can find the Museo de Arte Sacro and browse through its permanent collection of oil paintings.
