Museum of Northern Cultures

Casas Grandes

Taking advantage of your trip to the archaeological site, we invite you to visit the facilities of El Museo de las Culturas del Norte (Museum of the Northern Cultures) which will help you to better understand the historical and cultural background of these lands.

Inaugurated in 1996, this semi-subterranean museum won an award in a biennial focused on this specialty thanks to the design of architect Mario Shetjnan, because it is inspired by the ceremonial mound of Paquimé influenced by the power of stone, earth, and sky.

The museum site helps its visitors to deepen their knowledge about the Gran Chichimeca, from its antecedents to the development of the people who inhabited it. The building has a vast collection with more than 200 fossils of megafauna that came to inhabit this region, as well as incredible samples of Paquimé's ceramic work, other objects, weapons, and agricultural implements linked to the Gran Chichimeca (archeological sites formed by the north of Mexico and southwest of the United States) that have been recovered during diverse excavations in Casas Grandes.
