The Silver Route

Batopilas

One of the great challenges in Batopilas was the transportation of the silver to the nearest train station, where the main problems were the rugged terrain and the distance, since it had to reach Chihuahua, located 385 kilometers ( 285 miles) away.

The muleteers were responsible for carrying out the transportation feat, so that the ore would arrive smoothly. Therefore, they traveled the first 200 meters ( 660 feet ), on the back of a mule, stopping only five times. The rest of the way was covered by carts pulled by mules.

The number of animals required was as high as 200, and every 40 kilometers ( 25 miles ), the muleteers found stations with hot food, pasture and water for their beasts.

Nowadays, the Ruta de la Plata (“Silver Route”) is an activity that is only practiced in October, when the weather conditions in Batopilas are more favorable, that is, the heat is less suffocating. The route was created to relive the arduous days on the back of a mule or on horseback, which the muleteers used to transport the silver extracted from the mines of Batopilas and that it reached Chihuahua by train.

The attraction of the trail is that the walkers go through the most surprising landscapes of some of the neighboring municipalities of Batopilas: Guachochi, Carichic and Cusiguariachi, until they reach the city of Chihuahua, crossing through Cuauhtémoc, Gran Morelos and Santa Isabel. But, it is also a way to highlight the aspects of “arriería”, an activity that is about to disappear in our country.

To follow the Ruta de la Plata, it is necessary to hire the services of an agency specialized in adventure tourism.
