San Marcos Cathedral

Tuxtla Gutiérrez

It was built by the Dominican order in the 16th century and is the emblem of the Plaza Cívica in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The architectural beauty of the San Marcos Cathedral lies in its white facade that contrasts with the blue sky and the large tower with a carillon of 48 bells, which can be heard ringing every hour, and the parade of the apostles on a pedestal. Its interior consists of a single nave, designed in the form of a Latin cross and with side chapels.

From Thursday to Sunday you must be in the atrium at 8:00 pm to witness the sound and light show “ Cultura, Música y Tradiciones de Chiapas” (“Culture, Music and Traditions of Chiapas”). On the facade of the cathedral passages of the Mayan culture are projected, the ancestral paintings of the archaeological zone of Bonampak, the flora and fauna that inhabit the jungle, the marimba music and the dance of the parachicos, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The sound and light show lasts 10 minutes and is performed three times at 20 minute intervals. The cathedral is located on Avenida Central Oriente, in the downtown area of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
