Tonalá

Chiapas

It seems that Chiapas is a state of infinite natural beauty. Between the jungle and the sea there are hidden backwaters of tranquility in which besides resting we can know part of the history of Mexico and enjoy the traditions that its inhabitants keep alive despite the passage of time. One of these charming places is Tonalá, Chiapas.

By road, Tonalá is 3 hours and 20 minutes from Tapachula and two hours and 10 minutes from Tuxtla Gutierrez. The closest airports are those of these two cities, so to get there you can take a flight from Mexico City and drive or travel by bus.

Tonalá is located southwest of Chiapas, very close to the border with the state of Oaxaca, in fact, the Oaxacan municipality of San Pedro Tapanatepec is only one hour away by land in case you dare to make room in your itinerary for an express stop.

The weather in Tonalá, Chiapas, is sub-humid and hot so we recommend you to pack light clothes and a hat or cap, since the intense sun is one of its characteristics. April is usually the hottest month of the year, December is the coldest and from May to October there is rain, so plan your travel dates well.

The name Tonalá comes from the Nahuatl language and, in English, it means “hot place” and among its many attractions are vestiges of the Olmec culture. The first thing you have to try when arriving at this picturesque city is its seafood, which is extracted every day from places like Playa Arista, located approximately 20 kilometers ( 12 miles) away.

Its archaeological vestiges and the nature that surrounds Tonalá will allow you to know the track of its first settlers, to enjoy experiences outdoors and to practice extreme sports. You can also release turtles into the ocean.
