Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and Cultural Center Rosario Castellanos

Comitán

Built next to the Exconvento Dominico (Dominical Exconvent), this site houses the santo patrono de la ciudad de Comitán (Patron saint of the city of Comitán). With a neoclassical style and Mudejar details, stands out for its simple but colorful facade in a bright mustard yellow.

If you enter, you will find a single nave and two chapels on either side. In the main nave, multiple arches and illuminated niches exhibit saints adorned with flowers and bathed in the rays of the sun that filter through windows that serve as skylights.

In the ex-convent located next to the temple is the Centro Cultural Rosario Castellanos (Rosario Castellanos Cultural Center), an enclosure that serves for the dissemination of culture. Named after the writer and poet, the place was transformed so that its inhabitants could have a closer look at different artistic disciplines without having to go any further.

In its facilities, language courses, music, writing, poetry, dance and book presentations, film screenings, as well as conferences and workshops that integrate social participation and teaching are given.

The centre has three murals inside. The first one portrays the history of Comitán, which narrates from the pre-Hispanic period to modern times; another one is dedicated to Rosario Castellanos and shows the writer leaning out of a window with an open book next to her; the last one is a mural inspired by the Mayan culture, called “Escudo Jaguar”.
