Comitán

Chiapas

With a hot and humid climate most of the year, Comitán de Domínguez is known for being the cradle of the Independence of Chiapas, because before belonging to Mexico, it was part of Guatemala, remaining a few years as an independent country and then rejoining the states that make the Mexican Republic.

Just two hours and 25 minutes from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas (150 km / 93 miles ), is located this Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town). If you are traveling from another point, such as Mexico City, there are no flights to Comitán Chiapas, but there are flights to Tuxtla, which is the destination with the closest airport.

Colorful courtyards, windows that show archaeological sites and colonial enclosures, create Comitán de Domínguez, a Pueblo Mágico in the Heart of the Mayan World: Chiapas.

Distributed in a short extension, Comitán is full of elements that give a profound and rich meaning to the place, that you will immediately notice in its natural diversity and cultural complexity that characterizes it.

In its pre-Hispanic origin, Comitán was named Balún Canan or “Lugar de las nueve estrellas” (Place of the Nine Stars), given by the Tzeltal indigenous people who founded it. Years later it was submitted by the Aztecs, who renamed it as Comitán which means “Lugar de Fiebres” (Place of Fevers).

It was until the early years of the last century when it was given the surname Dominguez in memory of the Mexican doctor and politician, Belisario Dominguez.

As you tour the city, you will appreciate its traditional architecture with red tiles and light touches that allude to the neoclassicism. Famous for its haciendas, it also hosted the poetess Rosario Castellanos, attracting the interest of intellectuals and artists.
