Hopelchén

Campeche

To travel through the Región de los Chenes in the south of Mexico is like food for the memory and the soul since its landscapes steal the heart of everyone who is in front of them. These lands of very blue skies, fluffy clouds, and warm weather saw the birth of cities like Hopelchén.

Located in the northeast of the state of Campeche, Hopelchén is a picturesque city that reflects the relaxed way of life of the southerners with its high-ceilinged houses -to mitigate the intense heat- and facades painted in the most vibrant colors you may have seen.

Hopelchén is very close to the border between Campeche and Yucatán, surrounded by the municipalities of Calakmul, Champotón, Tenabo, and Hecelchakán, so getting to this jungle area takes time.

By road it is an hour and a half from Campeche, the state capital; two and a half hours from Merida, Yucatan; and 5 hours and 45 minutes from Cancun, Quintana Roo. The closest airport is Campeche, where you can rent a car or take a bus to this quiet community.

The weather in Hopelchén, Campeche, is warm and sub-humid so the average temperature is 26º C (79º F). Despite the fact that the rains are light, this period can go from May to October, even in winter light rains can still occur.

Hopelchén is a combination of Mayan words that, in English, means “Place of the five wells”, since there were precisely five wells in which the first inhabitants of the area were supplied with fresh water.

In fact, the Region de Los Chenes is named for the great number of wells that have been gradually discovered, hence many of the neighboring communities of Hopelchén have the ending 'chen' -well- at the end of their names.

Hopelchén is a small and very quiet town that is very easy to walk around, in fact, this is the best way to get to know its streets and discover the colonial constructions that have survived several historical conflicts.
