A journey through the past
It is impossible not to admire the historic facade of
Campeche Cathedral from anywhere in the city. The site was dedicated to
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
The building dates back to 1605 and was erected in replacement of the parish church. It was finished in 1760 with the completion of the flawless west steeple, “La Española”. It was not until 1850 when the other steeple, known as “La Campechana”, was added.
Going inside the Cathedral is like taking a step back in time. Look out for the high altar decorated with two adoring angels, and a silver tabernacle from the 17th century.
Don't forget to visit the Chapel of Jesús Nazareno, next to the cathedral, where you will find the Museum of Sacred Art and a collection which includes some of the original pieces from the cathedral. One particular highlight is an urn which depicts the Holy Burial of Jesus Christ.
