The must-sees of Guanajuato

Alexia Arana

In the north-central area of the Republic is the beautiful state of Guanajuato, a jewel with many historical antecedents and admirable natural riches that make this place one of the most wonderful states in Mexico.

A city that makes you travel back in time

The capital of the same name is distinguished by its admirable medieval style that seems to have come out of some kind of tale; The houses and their facades fill the center of this city with colors everywhere, its narrow streets and alleys take you through a labyrinth to discover monuments and its very famous stone tunnels make you tour the town as if you were in some other time.

In the center of this beautiful place is the “Teatro Juárez” created at the end of the 19th century with a neoclassical architectural style that draws your attention from the outside due to its large walls and admirable statues decorating its beautiful facade. Right opposite we find the “Jardín de la Unión”, with a kiosk in the middle of the square and surrounded by several restaurants and cafes with exquisite dishes typical of the region.

A variety for any palate

Speaking of exquisite dishes, on Avenida Juárez you can visit the famous Mercado Hidalgo, here you will find a gastronomic offer that ranges from smoothies, fruit cocktails and full meals to seafood and carnitas. You can also try ‘’ guacamaya ’’, the typical dish of the city and the one most recommended by the locals, which consists of a bread stuffed with pork rinds bathed in tomato sauce and arbol chile.

Attractive places in every corner

Near the Hidalgo Market is the Alhóndiga de Granaditas museum, which is dedicated to the heroes of Mexico's independence and is home to the famous legend of ´´El Pípila´´. This great building that in its early years was created as a warehouse, it houses a fundamental part of the incredible history of this great country.

If there is something that distinguishes Guanajuato a lot, it is its alleys, this city hides several, you can find one on each corner, but the one that gives this place beauty and one of the most emblematic is the Callejón del Beso, protagonist of a beautiful legend of love, in this narrow place you must climb its small steps with your partner and kiss, so your love will not die, according to the custom of this place.

Nearby you can find the Casa Diego Rivera Museum, the place where the famous muralist was born and housing 102 of his works. Also the El Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato is located a few blocks away, with artistic pieces and handicrafts everywhere, do not forget to take home a beautiful souvenir.

The Plaza de la Paz, also located in the center, is a colonial architectural gift that leaves you enchanted with its surroundings, such as its sherbets and ice cream shops. In this square the Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato is preserved, which you can admire from the outside as it rises diagonally with its orange color which makes it stand out in the middle of the park.

Another very important museum and the favorite of many is the Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato, a place not suitable for the sensitive, but for those who love mystery, it houses mummies with incredible stories and legends. The tour of this museum will make you want to return.

Guanajuato has an extensive list of unpublished places to visit, it is a place that knows no cultural limits and it is definitely the ideal destination to enter a world of different times. The history that inhabits this beautiful capital and the beauty that you can find will conquer you.
