Cerro El Centinela (El Centinela Hill)

Mexicali

Legend states that during the first two nights of February, a “lumbrada” (large fire) appears on El Centinela hill. If someone approaches and the fire is extinguished, it is because this person was not destined to possess Joaquín Murrieta's treasure.

This character was a famous Californian bandit who distributed his spoils among the most humble population of the region, in the 19th century, when Mexico lost California. Despite never living in Mexicali, Murrieta's escapes to hide from his pursuers led to various legends about his death and burial. And, one of these is the one that makes El Centinela hill famous.

The mountain range was also used as a refuge for the first Baja California natives and exporters. Nowadays, it is an area for those who want to practice mountain biking, since a 9.1-kilometer (5.6 miles) path was drawn, with slopes and straights.

Also, every year, the people from Mexicali gather to take a hike to the top and appreciate the cross that is located at 1,650 meters (5413 feet) above sea level. It should be noted that it is not a competition, but an activity to admire one of the natural wonders of Mexicali, which takes place in March. The ascent of the pilgrims can take up to five hours.
