Laguna Salada

Baja California

Mexicali, Baja California is a destination of contrasts that always surprises those who dare to explore it, a sample of this is Laguna Salada. Only the name of the lagoon remains, since you will not find any body of water around here. The water of the Sea of Cortés, which once filled this area, evaporated in the mid-eighties leaving a rough terrain of 60 kilometers (37 miles) full of white sand that shines at the whim of the sun, guarded by the hills and mountains of El Centinela, Sierra Cucapá and Sierra Juárez.

This site is a hypnotic place for lovers of extreme sports who usually visit it to practice ultra-light flights, mountain biking, ride in all-terrain vehicles or participate in strenuous races such as the “Ultramaratón en el desierto de la Laguna Salada” (Ultramarathon in the desert of Laguna Salada).

In spite of the extreme conditions of the deepest area of the whole country, with 12 meters below sea level and where the temperature can reach 43° C, life refuses to disappear from here with some cactus that decorate the landscape and serve as a hiding place for reptiles, insects and desert foxes.

Laguna Salada has such a strenuous, almost apocalyptic atmosphere, so it is not unusual for several scenes from the film Resident Evil: Extinction to be filmed here. But just, so your fun doesn't end, you can follow the palm tree trail to the nearby Cañón de Guadalupe, where you can rappel or climb.
