Former Convent of the Christ of the Lord of Tepozan

Real de Asientos

Just 5 minutes from Real de Asientos, this site was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is remarkable for its small cellars, narrow passageways and unevenness.

Both its altar and the sanctuary were built after the discovery of the Christ of Tepozan, patron saint of the miners who was found in a tree called tepozol.

Inside its church, you will find other works by Miguel Cabrera, the Vía Crucis altarpieces.

In his time, besides being a convent, it was a cloister for the Franciscans and it is said that in the catacombs are buried besides them, some miners who worked in the mines of the region.

And as in most villages in Mexico, this fact unleashed among its inhabitants the belief of apparitions of monks and paranormal events.

Today, the site functions as a museum, where you can see religious and other objects belonging to the Huachichil tribes, a nomadic Mexican ethnic group that inhabited most of the Chichimeca peoples and is now completely extinct.
