Calvillo

The main square, with its beautiful neoclassical kiosk at the center, is the best starting point to discover Calvillo's most outstanding landmarks. But before starting any walk, you must sweeten up with the famous nieves de garrafa del Popo (garrafa del Popo ice cream) , which have been made by several generations of the same family according to a traditional recipe.

The Parroquia of Nuestro Señor del Salitre (Nuestro Señor del Salitre Parish Church) is perhaps the most visited spot around the main square, since it has one of the largest domes in all Latin America and houses the figure of Señor del Salitre, patron saint of the village, to whom a large number of miracles are attributed. The construction of the temple began in 1772, so it is one of the oldest buildings in Calvillo.

The Palacio Municipal (Municipal Palace), on another side of the square, has two murals that summarise the history of the village and also of its agricultural production.

Another interesting building around the main square is Casa de la Cultura, donated by the wealthy neighbour Facundo Martínez to become a cultural centre and library. Built in pink quarry, in colonial style, with a pleasant central courtyard with arches, the house was catalogued by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History) as a Historical Heritage Site.

Finally, there is also the Parián, built in 1825, which under its nine arches concentrates commercial shops that, among other things, offer local crafts.

To continue the typical tour of the Historic Centre of Calvillo, one must go into a bakery and ask for a chamuco, made with two types of dough, which will gladden the heart and give energy to the body. And, to finish, go to the church of Guadalupe, built in neo-Gothic style with pink quarry and located on an elevation that offers beautiful views of the Pueblo Mágico.
