Walk Tlalpujahua, the land of tezontle
The main tourist draw of El Carrizalillo is located at the slope of the Colima Volcano in a mountainous region with abundant vegetation and temperate climate. Here you will find a lagoon surrounded by a cobbled road and an imposing view of the volcanoes.
Once there, take off your shoes and walk barefoot, feeling the moisted soil. You will be impressed by the cleanliness of the place, which is run as a cooperative where everyone in the community pitches in to keep it in perfect condition. Put together a picnic or a barbecue, and spend the afternoon touring the lagoon by boat or kayak, or touring the surrounding area on horseback. If you like fishing, you’ll have a chance to catch some exquisite black bass.
Stay overnight and enjoy the stars at one of the many camping options; in the morning you will see the sunrise and hear the chachalacas (ortalis) livening up the forest with their loud cackling. Enjoy a long walk and come across the hoof-prints of the deer that cross the countryside, and marvel at exotic birds such as the Raja de Ocote, recognizable by the white stripe that runs along its entire wingspan.
Walk among the trees as you chat with the inhabitants of the area, listening to the extraordinary stories about pyramids yet to be discovered in the area, or join in the ancient ritual of the Nahuatl Temazcal.
