Tourism Tianguis 2006 By The Numbers... And It All Adds Up
To Success
The
31st Tourism Tianguis, Mexico's most important tourism trade fair
celebrated annually in the sunny resort city of Acapulco on Mexico's
Pacific coast, was alive with activity, and no wonder: Tourism Tianguis
generates approximately 40 percent of the business that makes up
Mexico's thriving tourism sector, and hosts many newsworthy press
conferences and announcements.
This year's Tourism Tianguis was the most comprehensive ever, with more
than 450 exhibitors featuring new tourism products such as culture,
nature, premium and special segments. With more than 1,000 potential
buyers in assistance and 19,000 pre-arranged meetings, there was never
a dull moment at this year's event.
Approximately 150 new international buyers and 60 new Mexico-based
buyers participated at Tourism Tianguis 2006. Of the international
buyers, 28 are from Asia.

Located within the state of Guerrero on Mexico's Pacific
coast, Acapulco is merely 200 miles south of Mexico City, and
easily accessible via road and air. Aca, as the locals call it, is
fondly regarded as a famed celebrity haunt, attracting the likes of
Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Placido Domingo and Julio Iglesias.
Today, Aca's rare mixture of golden beaches, Sierra Madre Mountains,
tropical jungles and lagoons, as well as the Mexican warmth, mysticism
and tradition, all combine to form a unique experience to last a
lifetime.
The famed Acapulco Bay, irresistible to humans since the days of the
Aztec Empire, was once considered the official Pacific port authorized
in the New World to receive Spanish galleons from the Philippines and
China. In recent times, the bay continues to attract thousands of
visitors each year, not so much for its trading, but for its infinite
number of attractions and pristine beaches.

Low-Cost Airlines Boost Mexico Domestic Flights
Mexican
tourism officials and airline representatives discussed the country's
low-cost airline trend and its impact on the tourism industry at a
press conference held at Tourism Tianguis 2006, Mexico's most important
travel trade fair.
During the past year, several private and semi-private airlines such as
Avolar (www.avolar.com.mx), ABC
Interjet (www.interjet.com.mx) and
Volaris (www.volaris.com.mx), as well
as Mexicana Airline's Click Mexicana (www.clickmexicana.com) have
launched low-cost flights to different parts of Mexico.
Mexico's longest-running airline, Mexicana Airlines, initiated the
low-cost airline trend with its July 2005 launch of Click. Avolar soon
followed, introducing its fleet of three planes of less than 150
passengers in capacity in September 2005. Avolar hopes to service more
than 800,000 tourists by the end of 2006. ABC Interject introduced its
fleet of brand-new planes in December 2005.

SONORA: The Desert Meets the Sea on Mexico's West Coast
The
state of Sonora is located in northwest Mexico, bordered by Chihuahua,
Sinaloa, Arizona to the north and the Gulf of California to the west.
Its unique landscape consists of stunning beaches, lush valleys,
majestic mountains and arid deserts, all part of the Sierra Madre
Occidental.
The land that comprises Sonora is currently inhabited by numerous
native groups, including the Yaquis, Mayos, Primas, Pápagos, Opatos,
Seris and Guarijíos, who still preserve their ancestors' folkloric
customs and traditions found throughout the state. Spanish colonial
presence, on the other hand, is now very limited to the Jesuit missions
and towns located around the mines.

WORLD HERITAGE MARVELS: Find them all around Mexico
|

|
Mexico is ranked first in the Americas and eighth
worldwide in UNESCO sites. The country's islands and protected areas in
the Gulf of Baja California are the most recent addition to Mexico's
impressive list of 25 sites recognized by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization since 1987.
UNESCO's World Heritage sites are cultural, natural, or mixed landmarks
that represent the rich culture of a country and deserve international
recognition. After a destination is deemed a World Heritage site, a
country may receive financial assistance and expert advice from the
World Heritage Committee to support activities for the preservation of
its sites. Since 1972, UNESCO has inscribed 812 properties in 137
countries worldwide on its World Heritage List. For more information,

A description of Mexico's official World Heritage sites with their
dates of designation follow. Some are already popular tourist sites,
including Sian Ka'an in the Riviera Maya (1987) and the Historic Center
of Mexico City and Xochimilco (1987); others, such as the Historic
Center of Zacatecas (1993) and the Franciscan Missions in the Sierra
Gorda (2003) in Queretaro, are off the beaten path but undoubtedly
merit the extra effort to visit. .

beaches are also home to 695 vascular plant species, more than any other
marine and insular property on the World Heritage List. In addition,
the aquatic paradise contains 39% of the world's total number of
species of marine mammals and a third of the world's marine cetacean
