November 28 to December 6, Guadalajara International Book Fair


Over 1500 editorial houses from 39 countries gather for the largest Spanish-language book festival in the world, now in its 23rd year.

December 1 to 30, Campeche's International Festival of the Historical Center, Campeche, Campeche.


The city of
Campeche hosts this festival throughout the month of December. It includes classical, contemporary and popular music concerts, theater, dance and book presentations. The festival is brought to a finale with a popular Christmas concert in the atrium of Campeche cathedral.

December 2 to 6, Rhythms, Colors and Flavors, Los Cabos, Baja California

An annual festival promoting the culture, art and gastronomy of Baja California Sur. The festival's program includes gastronomical, cultural and artistic events within the beautiful natural setting of Los Cabos and other tourist destinations.

December 2 to 6, Vallarta Film Festival, Vallarta, Nayarit.

This film festival presents the best of independent cinema with special events and movie industry panels, bringing together a mixture of celebrities, film buffs, film students and entertainment industry professionals.

December 5 and 6,  Great Pacific Marathon Mazatlan, Sinaloa

Over 6500 athletes participate in this event, now in its tenth year, with 5K and 10K races. There is also an event for the visually impaired and people who use a wheelchair or crutches.

December 12, Fiesta of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Throughout Mexico, but particularly in Mexico City


The main Virgin of Guadalupe celebrations take place just outside
Mexico City, where thousands of pilgrims converge on the Basilica de Guadalupe. The square in front of the Basilica is a stage for singing, dancing and celebration.

December 16 to 23, Posada and Piñata Fair. Acolman de Nezahualcoyotl, Estado de Mexico.

An annual celebration near Mexico City, in which the Christmas traditions of piñatas and posadas are celebrated. Workshops in piñata-making are offered.

December 16 to 24, Posadas

Every night from the 16th to the 24th of December, there are street processions that culminate in house parties known as posadas, in which Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem is remembered.

December 23rd,  Radish Night, Oaxaca, Oaxaca

The Oaxaca Zocalo is filled with stalls during this popular event in which local craftspeople carve and assemble radishes into all different types of figures, from flowers and animals to saints and nativity scenes.

December 25, Christmas


The last posada takes place on Christmas Eve, "Nochebuena," and families have a late-night supper. In cities there are calendas, festive processions and other events.

October 31st , November 1st and 2nd Days of the Dead. Celebrated throughout Mexico.

Deceased relatives are remembered and honored in cemeteries and family homes in this unique cultural celebration. Festivities take place throughout the country, but celebrations are most colorful in Patzcuaro, Oaxaca, Chiapas and San Andres Mixquic (D.F.).

November 5 to 8, Rocky Point Rally Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.

 
A  motorcycle  event  that  raises  money  for  various  charities.  This  year's  festivities  will  include a poker run, various biker competitions, stunt shows, and parties.

November 9 to 15, Cancun Film Festival. Cancun and the Mayan Riviera

Featuring original productions by both new and renowned filmmakers, the Cancun Film Fest is now in its third year. Movies presented at the festival will include feature films, documentaries and short films, directed by such internationally famous directors as Jose Padilho from Brazil, Jaime Rosales from Spain, Celine Sciamma and Philip Claudel from France and many others.

One of
Mexico's main annual cultural events, the Cervantino Festival draws performers and spectators from around the world and features opera, classical and contemporary music concerts, dance and theater performances, and visual arts exhibits.

Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival Playa del Carmen.

Now in its fourth year, this film festival is a competition and a show of edgy and compelling independent short films and documentaries from filmmakers around the world. Films screened belong to one of four categories: Documentary, Animation, Experimental and Fiction. Throughout the festival, there are also workshops and conferences on cinematography and film making offered. All activities are free.

October 28 to November 2, Festival of the Skulls Aguascalientes.

Skulls of different sizes and materials will be on display as well as stands with traditional food and seasonal fruit. Altars in honor of the dead, diverse artistic and cultural shows and a skeleton parade and "living altar" are all part of the events planned.

Sep 1 ? 11, 12th International Mariachi and Charro Festival, Guadalajara, Jalisco

Annual celebration of mariachi music in the mariachi capital of the world, gathering musicians from Mexico and around the world.

Sep 8, Tepozteco Challenge, Tepoztlan, Morelos

Performance depicting King Tepoztecatl's conversion to the Catholic religion. Procession leads to the Tepozteco Pyramid, where offerings are made. This event includes a food festival, chinelo dances dating back to prehispanic times, and fireworks.

 

Sep 15 ? 16, Mexican Independence Day.  Nationwide

Indisputably Mexico's most important and most revered National Holiday is Independence Day - Dia de la Patria. During this time, Fiestas Patrias take place nationwide. From the evening of September 15th, parties begin. At 11pm, the President of the Republic shouts the Cry (El Grito) of "Viva Mexico" from the balcony of the National Palace, as Mexicans cry back with "Viva!" in an emotion-packed traditional annual ritual. The Zocalo in Mexico City brims and buzzes with unabated excitement. Celebrations are particularly lively at the revolutionary Colonial centers, especially Queretaro and San Miguel de Allende - important and significant places before, during and after the war of Independence from Spain. This is a great time to be in Mexico if you like celebrations, parties and a buzzing atmosphere!

 

Sep 19 ? 21, Fall Equinox at Kulkulcan, Chichen Itza, Yucatan

Marking the first day of the Autumn; many archaeological structures (especially those closely lined with astronomical events) are popular on the 21st and 22nd of September, as the sun's light matches up with features on the structures left behind by the ancient civilizations. The most famous is Chichen-Itza, where a shadow of the plumed serpent moves up the main temple. You can discover Chichen-Itza and many other Archaeology Parks in Mexico with Mexperience.

 

Sep 24, Running of the Bulls at San Miguel (Sanmiguelada) -- San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

Also known as the Pamplonada because it is Mexico's imitation of Spain?s "running of the bulls," the Sanmiguelada is an annual festival usually taking place the third Saturday of September in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. The event involves dances, concerts, fireworks and bulls running through town. Daring participants meet at high noon.

Aug 1 ? 15, International Chamber Music Festival -- San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel is famous for non-stop festivals and parties all year-round and this is one of its most famous, and most widely attended. The festival lasts for a fortnight - book early as the hotels fill up at this time.

Aug 15, Dia de la Asuncion de la Virgen Guadalupe (Ascension Day) -- Nationwide

This is one of Mexico's most important religious events. The Virgin Guadalupe is extremely important and revered by Mexican Catholics. Special masses and processions take place nationwide, with a huge mass at the Basilica de Guadalupe (where the original image is hosted) in Mexico City. 

 

Aug 2o, Mani Festival (Fiesta de Mani) -- Mani, Yucatan

This festival features local dancers, bands, traditional cuisine, live concerts, mechanical attractions, art exhibitions and more. The festival takes place at the center plaza and offers visitors from all over the world a unique cultural experience.

Aug 20-28, Paracho Guitar Festival -- Paracho, Michoacan

Come and join the festival where the most famous guitars are made in Mexico.

 

Aug 28-31, Morismas of Bracho (Las Morismas de Bracho) -- Zacatecas, Zacatecas State

A reenactment of the battles between Moors and Christians, this event involves thousands of actors and has been held annually for more than 300 years.

 

Aug 29, Chile in Walnut Sauce Festival (Festival del Chile en Nogada) -- Puebla, Puebla State

Mexico's national dish is commemorated every year with several activities, including culinary conferences and samplings, as well as a competition for the largest chile, judged by the Guiness Book of World Records. Inspired by the Mexican flag, the dish contains a poblano chile (green), walnut sauce (white), with pomegranate seeds (red) sprinkled over.

July 13-23,    Annual International "ROSETE ARANDA" Puppet Festival--Huamantla, Tlaxcala.

A time-honored tradition in Mexico, more than 15 cities in the state of Tlaxcala will be hosting this festival. For two weeks, a multitude of puppeteers and puppets of all colors, shapes and sizes will invade Mexico's smallest state.

July 14-23,    Nueva Paquime Festival, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua.

This festival, taking place in Casas Grandes, just outside the renowned Paquime archaeological site (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998), is a celebration of the heritage and cultures of northern Mexico.

July 17 and 24,  Guelaguetza. Oaxaca, Oaxaca State.

Dating back to prehispanic times when the festival was offered to the gods in hopes of a bountiful harvest, this event brings together delegations from the region's seven indigenous cultures. Traditional songs and dances are performed by each group, and objects and handicrafts typical to each region are also on display.

An annual film festival showcasing short films and documentaries and awarding the creators of outstanding films with the materials and equipment needed to continue their art. Every year, a country is spotlighted at the festival as the special guest of honor, with a variety of activities that provide a deeper look into the film culture, history and contemporary trends of the guest country. July 26, National Sarape Fair, Santa Ana Chiautempan, Tlaxcala.

The renowned rectangular "sarape" shawls, one of Mexico?s traditional textile handicrafts, are spotlighted every year at this annual fair.

This pueblito is just a few miles from downtown Puebla, but looks like a painting from an antique Mexican calendar. The annual Xochimilco Festival is held two weeks before Easter and dates back to pre-colonial times when Mexicans honoured the goddess of flowers (Xochipilli) and the goddess of dance (Maculxochitl) to ensure good harvests. Every year, a young woman is crowned La Flor Mas Bella del Ejido (the most beautiful flower of the land) who presides over colourful parades on flower-decorated barges along Xochimilco's famed canals.

The 25th Historic Center Festival of Mexico will take place from the 12th until the 29th of March 2009. The Boat Show Latin America 2009 takes place in Puerto Vallarta. It is the most important boat show in Latin America. It will take place in the 8,000 square meters of the port administration facilities. March, 6th. Night of the Witches (Noche de Brujas), Catemaco:

The small lakeside town of Catemaco, referred to as the mecca of witch doctors, attracts thousands of people seeking non-conventional healing methods. Many swear by the results. In the summer of 1937, 454 Spanish children were sent to Mexico where the government of Lazaro Cárdenas had offered them exile to escape from the Spanish Civil War. This exhibition tells their story, and that of the means of transportation during this era.

January 17. San Antonio Abad, All across Mexico:

Known as a very devout people, Mexicans are also much concerned about the fate of their pets On January 17, day of Saint Anthony, they bring their pets to be blessed at the local church. With the diversity of nature to be found in Mexico, you can guarantee some unusual pets will be thronging the church square - cats, dogs, quetzals, geckos, you name it - you'll find it!

The feast is usually celebrated in a morning mass (around 10am) in the local church and then the priest emerges to bless the assorted animals waiting bemusedly in the church square. Don't just expect to see pets either, since for agricultural people in Mexico, the Feast of San Antonio Abad is an opportunity to ensure the health of their livestock, donkeys and horses over the coming year.
