MEXICO TOURISM BOARD /CONSEIL DE PROMOTION TOURISTIQUE DU MEXIQUE

Press Release/Communiqué de presse:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Jerez, Zacatecas is declared a Magic Town

In order to promote and preserve the cultural and historical heritage of Mexico, and to encourage its inhabitants and enhance the tourism value of Mexican places, the Magic Town Program was created.

A Magic Town is a place with symbols, legends, history, transcendental facts, everyday life and above all, Magic.

Jerez de García Salinas is a colonial city in the middle of the State of Zacatecas, 60 kilometers north of the city of Zacatecas. It is an important place due to its economy and culture. The town’s name comes from Xerez (Scherish), which means “place with plenty of vegetables” in Arab. When the Spanish conquerors arrived, they thought that this place was similar to the Spanish city “Jerez de la Frontera”.

Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo and Amalia García, Zacatecas Gouvernor declared Jerez de García Salinas the first Magic Town of Zacatecas because of its traditions, costumes and architecture.

Elizondo emphasized that: “To delcare a Magic Town doesn’t mean that everything is done; on the contrary, it is a commitment for double efforts in order to be more competitive in terms of services and have better communication routes. The Mexico Tourism Board will support in the promotion not only of Jerez but of all the Mexican Magic Towns”. He also mentioned: “I think it is important to insist that a Magic Town is the result of the commitment and conviction of its inhabitants and their belief in tourism”.

Jerez de García Salinas has all the adequate tourist infrastructure for accommodation, restaurants and meeting centers. The town also has schools that promote arts and science, such as the Jerezano Culture Institute, as well as the “Sierra de Cardos” where ecotourism activities can be practiced.

At the end of Elizondo´s visit, he commended the hard work that the Governor, Amalia García, has been doing in order to increase tourist activities.
