§The Cozumel

§The project also includes creating a

October to March holds 66% of the world-wide cruise capacity.
§Recovery of the traditional and

its infrastructure and services.
Due to the great importance of CozumelIsland as an
international destination, the Federal Government will develop the Cozumel Marine project. In order to integrate this
beautiful destination to the Caribbean circuit,
this project will fortify its supplies and extend its infrastructure to welcome
around 36,000 international visitors every year. This project will generate
around 1,000 direct and 4,000 indirect jobs.
The development is designed to integrate a navy, hotels, residential,
commercial and recreational areas, public and private marines, bicycle and
pedestrian lines, and plazas. A sea wall will connect the facilities and will
also integrate the project with the Carnival Cruises wharf. The marina will be
able to host up to 330 yachts and cruises.
It is important to mention that further efforts to improve the
area’s general image will also take place. The Caleta
area and the cenote “El Aerolito”
will be cleaned and used as a safety zone for boats before hurricanes and
storms.
On the other hand, the planning includes a designated area for at least
3 new hotels with a capacity of 594 rooms, 466 villas and condos with
recreational commercial areas. The President Hotel Group will carry out its
plans for this extension that will increase the Island’s
accommodation capacity in around 220 rooms.
The Ministry of Tourism Rodolfo Elizondo,
announced the recovery of the traditional and colourful Historical Centre of Cozumel. The island will offer national and international
visitors a first-class facade by the improvement in its infrastructure and
services.
Additionally, the Ministers of Tourism of Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador,
Nicaragua and Costa Rica, signed the "Joint Declaration of Cozumel", which establishes an organization formed by
these countries, in order to improve the competitiveness of the region and face
the fast growth of the Cruise industry. This important industry has experience
an annual average growth rate over 8%.
The Great Caribbean region, that includesMexico, Central America and the Caribbean
Islands, offers unique competitive advantages, extremely important for the
cruise industry not only for its geographical location that represents two
thirds of North America world-wide market, but also because from October to
March, this region holds 66% of the world-wide cruise capacity.
This strategy aims to improve the competitiveness of the region, to
assure the benefits with an equitable distribution, to protect the environment
and natural resources, and to increase the market value of the offered
products.
