Sustainable tourism in Mexico

This year, the federal government has established 14 institutions willing to develop the nature tourism sector until 2012 by helping rural and indigenous communities. Rodolfo Elizondo Torres, Minister of Tourism of Mexico, announced that thanks to those efforts, Mexico can count on the support of 1,239 companies active in ecological, adventure, and rural tourism.

Furthermore, the federal government will invest 500 million pesos in 2009 to improve this segment and promote small companies operating in rural and indigenous communities.

The Tourism Minister also presented new products for sustainable tourism development in natural sites. Of these, three new tourism products promise to give nature tourism in Mexico a boost. They are: a new manual for tourism product development in natural zones; the new tourism brand "Nature, ecotourism in Mexico"; and a national network for ecotourism equipment.

A myriad of activities thanks to Mexico’s biodiversity

Mexico has the sixth highest level of biodiversity of any country in the world. This allows for a myriad of encounters with nature.

  • 29 World Heritage Sites, including 4 natural sites recognized for their outstanding value to humanity by the UNESCO;
  • The second largest coral reef system in the world;
  • 18 million acres of ecological preserves;
  • 171 protected areas, including biosphere reserves and national parks, are home to 10% of the world’s species;
  • 4 different coasts with a huge diversity of marine life, fauna, and geological formations;
  • 720 species of reptiles—the biggest number in the world;
  • 502 species of mammals—second place in the world;
  • More than 1,000 species of birds;
  • 30,000 species of plants;
  • Number 1 worldwide for cactus species—950 species;
  • More than 1,800 endemic species;
  • Attractive mix of natural and cultural attractions;
  • 57 different ethnic groups.

Mexico is the most diverse country in ecotourism and adventure travel in America. In the south, the tropical rainforests and its rivers allow for all kinds of outdoor activities. Also, history and culture are ubiquitous, making your vacation a lifetime experience.

In central and northern Mexico, majestic deserts await adventurers. With a unique diversity of flora and fauna, combined with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, opportunities for exciting moments are innumerable: outdoor activities, snorkelling and scuba diving, camping, hunting, extreme sports, rafting, ecotourism, kayaking, hiking and climbing, fishing, surfing, and much more…
