Last weekend in Toronto,
the Harbourfront Centre in collaboration with the
Mexico Tourism Board, launched the inaugural ofMexico: Beyond Your
Expectations festival, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexican
independence and the 100th anniversary of the revolution through cultural and
musical events.
For three days, the Mexican rock groups Café Tacuba (Grammy award-winning), Los de Abajo (playing at
the Montreal Jazz Festival 2009), and ChikitaViolenta enlivened the festival. According to the
organizers, this festival was the most crowded of all the festivals of the World
Route 2009 series, to which it belongs.
The festival also commemorated the 25th anniversary of the
death of El Santo, one of Mexico?s
most famous and iconic Mexican wrestlers aka luchadores. In his honour, Toronto
held its first live outdoor LuchaLibrematch which, took
place on Saturday, attracting experts and novices alike of this art. Blue
Demon Jr., Incognito, Superxtremo, Cody, Sombra, and Tigerstar gave
their best in seemingly never-ending battles! Wearing colourful masks, the luchadores vied to dominate the ring as they were spurred
on by a captivated audience?
According to Linda, a Canadian member of the audience:
??The highlight of the day was definitely La
LuchaLibre!
It was great and I?ve never ever seen so many people at Harbourfront
enjoying this event! I really hope to see it next year again!??.
Last but not least, the festival boasted various cultural
highlights, including movies such as the Santo
y Blue Demon vs. Los Monstruos, but also Santo y Blue Demon in La Atlántida. Authentic and contemporary
Mexican cuisine, prepared by Toronto?s
restaurants La Tortilleria, Frida,
and the World Café, was truly appreciated by the public! What a weekend!
According to Andrea, a Mexican participant of the event,
??The Mexican Festival was a well organized event which made all of us Mexicans
living in Toronto
remember how special and unique our culture is. It was very impressive for
the organizers to have managed to bring such well-known entertainers to Toronto. The Mariachi
put on a very lively show during the day, and the Café Tacuba
concert was outstanding. The bands? performance exceeded my expectations and
gave the festival a true Mexican atmosphere.??
Mexico is back and ready to
let you discover some of the most amazing and beautiful places in the world.
Come to discover the Mexican culture, food and music.
