PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM MEXICO TO THE WORLD

Montreal, May 26th, 2009

  • "Vive México", a call for solidarity
  • 90 million dollars promotion campaign for tourism industry recovery
  • Sunwing Vacations will be recommencing its flights from Toronto to Cancun effective June 3rd

This past Monday, President Felipe Calderón launched the "Vive México" campaign, a call for a combined effort aimed at helping the Mexican tourist industry recover from publicity surrounding the H1N1 flu outbreak.

International stars, such as Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo, Mexican film actor Diego Luna and FC Barcelona soccer star Rafael Marquez are participating with campaign messages. "It's not just a promotional campaign, it's a national movement calling for involvement by all Mexicans, and particularly our most famous citizens," Calderón said, surrounded by Mexican celebrities.

The new campaign involves unprecedented investment in the country's tourism industry, including $90 million over the next few months, plus a collective effort by key figures from Mexico?s business, cultural, sports and artistic scenes to persuade national and international travellers to rediscover Mexico.

Members of the business community and tour operators will actively participate in the campaign by offering attractive deals on travel to Mexico. This event represents a unique opportunity to boost national and international tourism this summer.

With respect to the Canadian market, Daryl McWilliams, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Sunwing Vacations, announced yesterday that the company will resume flights to Mexico in June. On June 3rd, Sunwing will once again begin roundtrips between Toronto to Cancún, offering spectacular vacation packages! And flights from Vancouver on Aeromexico are programmed to start again on June 27.

Every effort is being made to reactivate the Mexican tourism industry. Canada will be making an important contribution. Gino Vanelli, a celebrated jazz musician native of Quebec, will be opening the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival with a free concert on June 13th at Mamita Beach, at the heart of the world?s most beautiful tourist region. For four days, Riviera Maya will once again become host to some of the globe?s best national and international jazz acts.
