SUN, STONE AND SHADOWS, A COMPILATION OF LEGENDARY
MEXICAN STORIES, COME TO LIFE IN THE U.S.
Houston, TX,
October 21Th, 2008 – “Perhaps literature is the best lens
through which to observe Mexico’s
soul.” wrote Jorge Hernandez, author who put together the collection of
the twenty short stories that make up the book Sun, Stone and Shadows. This book is the first to be published
specifically for the largest literature
program of the U.S.,
The Big Read.
The Big Read was designed to revitalize the role of
reading in American culture and promote the transformative power of literature.
This was an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, whose main goal
is to address the decline of literary
reading happening rapidly among all groups in America, especially more among young readers.
The Big Read gives Americans
the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The
initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns,
comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature, an ambitious
national publicity campaign and an extensive Web site providing comprehensive
information on authors and their works.
During the Society of American Travel Writers in Houston, the book “Sun, Stones and Shadows” will
be presented to the audience during the closing celebrations that will be hosted
by the Mexico Tourism Board. [c1]The Big Read
describes this anthology presents a collection of twenty stories of
extraordinary quality, written by the finest Mexican authors born during the
first half of the twentieth century. Through these pages, readers will tour the
real and the unreal, the faithfully rendered and the fantastic, as well as the
tangible past of Mexican history. Readers will also travel between urban
reflections on everyday life and intimate inventions that set Mexico apart
from landscapes, other cultures, and other literatures.
The book, masterminded by Garcia Oteyza, cultural attaché in WashingtonDC
for the Mexican Embassy, was started as an idea written on a napkin. He then
invited Jorge Hernandez and poet Francisco Hernandez to anthologize the book,
formulating a long roster of writers and stories. From the onset, it was
decided that the authors who would make up the book, be born before 1940, be of
Mexican decent and thus leaving space for another project of big stories of
many other writers.
