THE MEXICO TOURISM BOARD CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO, IL (Oct. 2, 2009) – The Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) and the state of Guanajuato will be part of the Hispanic heritage festivities by participating in the 5th Anniversary of Vive la Hispanidad next week on October 9th in Chicago to celebrate the conclusion of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th to October 15th, celebrates the heritage and culture of Hispanics and also recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. The 5th Annual Vive la Hispanidad “celebrates the ethnic diversity of the U.S. and the integration of cultures that are the fabric of our society,” and will feature a great variety of art, food, music and dance.

“We are excited to be representing Mexico during this event that celebrates our Hispanic heritage,” says Rodrigo Esponda, Director of the MTB in Chicago. “We want to show Mexico’s wonderful culture to Chicago’s Hispanic community so that it can learn more about our country and everything that it has to offer, especially in terms of tourism.”

Mexico’s tourism offerings and cultural diversity will be well represented within the Latino community of Chicago, which has the third largest Hispanic market in the U.S. and is also home to a large population of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

The MTB is excited to feature its culture at this celebration with a presentation of the Danza de los Concheros by the Mexican Dance Ensemble. There will also be a booth at the event where the public will be able to learn about all the great tourism destinations that Mexico has, one of them being Guanajuato.

Located in Mexico’s central region, Guanajuato is known for its splendid monuments and buildings that make up an architectural landscape full of culture and history. Its colonial constructions have been kept intact for hundreds of years and it is a state known for its cultural and artistic lifestyle.  And to commemorate Mexico’s100 years of the Revolution and its 200 Years of Independence, the “Expo Parque Bicentenario” (Bicentennial Expo Park) is being created in the region of El Bajio, near Guanajuato city, by the federal and state governments. The park will contain photographs and exhibitions that will transport visitors into the past and allow them to reflect on the future of our environment.  This expo is set to open from July 10th through November 20th, 2010. More information about the project can be found at http://www.bicentenarioguanajuato.gob.mx/turismo/iberoamerica/.

Hector Velazquez, coordinator of the Expo Parque Bicentenario, will be available for interviews during the Vive la Hispanidad event, or upon request from October 8th through the 11th.
