THE ACCIDENTAL MUMMIES OF GUANAJUATO EXHIBITION TOUR DEBUTS IN DETROIT

DETROIT, Mich., Sept. 24, 2009 – Mexico’s 2010 Bicentennial celebrations have begun and as one of the official events the country’s 200 Years of Independence, for the first time ever, the fascinating Mummies of Guanajuato will leave Mexico to tour the United States in an exhibition called The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato.

The tour will begin in Detroit, with the exhibition opening to the public on October 10th at the Detroit Science Center, before touring other U.S. cities.  Tickets are $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for seniors (60+) and $19.95 for children (2-12) and are available at www.detroitsciencecenter.org, www.accidentalmummies.com and www.museumtix.com.

The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato is a 10,000 square-foot exhibition that will feature 36 mummies from the Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato.  This exhibit will combine science, history and cultural anthropology and take the visitor back in time to learn about the lives of these mummies who were once miners, fathers, soldiers, farmers and children.

You can also celebrate the world debut with former President of Mexico Vicente Fox at the Gran Noche de Estreno World Debut Preview Event on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the Detroit Science Center. Tickets for this event are $125 per person or $200 per couple, and are available by calling 313.577.8400, ext. 432.

“We hope that this fantastic exhibition will peak the interest of cultural travelers and lure them to visit Guanajuato, a state filled with Cultural Heritage colonial architecture and many wonders” said Rodrigo Esponda, Director of the Mexico Tourism Board for the Midwest.

The Consulate of Mexico in Detroit has been instrumental in helping bring the exhibition to the city. “This is an incredible opportunity to enjoy the exhibition, for the first time ever out of Mexico, and for people to learn more about the Mexican culture and the profound respect towards the dead,” said Vicente Sanchez, Consul of Mexico in Detroit.

These accidental mummies were naturally mummified in their tombs, due to the warm climate of the area, which dried the bodies leaving them intact.  Thanks to facial reconstructions by forensic artists, we are able to get an insight into their lives.

Visitors of their exhibit will receive information on Mexico and Guanajuato. Promotional giveaways will also be offered.
