16th Century
Pueblo Embraces Contemporary Attractions
If
you want the magical experience of a 16th century Mexican pueblo while enjoying
modern amenities, visit the mountain city of San Miguel de Allende,
Guanajuato. This cobblestone street city offers its guests the opportunity of
enjoying well-maintained Baroque architecture, 5-star hotels and varied leisure
opportunities.
Mostly
known as an artist’s town, its flamboyant and secluded atmosphere is
often visited by national and international artists, many of whom have set up
small businesses in the city. During a short walk around the center of the city
one can enjoy murals and paintings by local artists at the InsitutoAllende, dance to the beat of the son in El Jardin, learn how to make a meal in one of its many cooking
schools, relax at the Sierra Nevada SPA or study the Baroque architecture of
its famous Parroquia and colonial mansions.
The
outskirts of the town provide alternative opportunities for visitors. El Santuario Hotel has a golf course and Las Aves offers temezcal treatments. The ecological reserve of El Charco del Ingenio, is a natural spring and pool nestled within canyon walls
ideal for hiking, rock climbing and horseback riding.
Historically
the town has enjoyed a privilege place in Mexico. When it was founded in
1542, its was a main stop on the Antiguo Camino Real
silver route and Mexican Independence hero Ignacio Allende
was born there. Mexico’s
Secretariat of Tourism, SECTUR, has named it a MagicalTown
for its unique ambience and its representatives have been working on making t a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
