Campeche: the Next Tourist Frontier

Campeche, located in the Yucatan Peninsula and internationally known for its grand haciendas built during the Spanish Colonial era,  now offers unique resort experiences and promises to be the next tourist frontier, according to Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Rodolfo Elizondo-Torres.

The jewel of this state, however, is its capital, the World Heritage Site of Campeche. This harbor city is surrounded by a 6.5 thick and 26 feet high wall built to protect the city from pirates.

Today this quiet town offers visitors a relaxing and educational visit. Its historic downtown in centered by el Jardin, a plaza where people meet to chat or watch local artists. In front of the Jardin you can admire the white Baroque profile of the Cathedral, opposite the Plaza de la Independencia, as well as the Portales (Halls), where you will find numerous clothing and handicraft shops.

At the market you can also enjoy a delicious pan de cazón, the traditional fish dish of the state. You can also enjoy a walk along the Malecón (Boardwalk) while watching the sunset on the horizon.

It is this quiet environment that Mexico, and many investors, hope will attract tourist and meeting and convention planners to Campeche. Westin hotels has started building a Golf and Spa resort in Campeche Playa and other chains such as Holiday Inn and One Hotels are also building smaller hotels. Construction of a new Convention Center and Exposition Center are also in the works.
