State Governments Present Infrastructure Programs to Reactivate Tourism

Ivonne Ortega, Governor of the State of Yucatan, announced a plan to reactivate operations at the Chichen Itza Airport, which is located near the new Wonder of the World: Chichen Itza.

“We want to reshape the function of this terminal so that the main beneficiary is the tourism sector, both domestic and international,” said Governor Ortega at Mexico’s 7th National Convention of the American Chamber of Commerce.

Since its opening in 2001, the Chichen Itza Airport has been working far below capacity with idled international facilities.

Ortega added that her government is also investing in a bullet train project that will run from the city of Progreso to Valladolid and the Riviera Maya.

Similarly, Juan Sabines, Governor of the State of Chiapas, stated that to improve the competitiveness of the State, his government plans to develop a regional hub at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport to link economic activity between Central America and Mexico.

Governor Sabines also added that he supports the development of new tourist corridors such as Palenque-San Cristobal, which will also encourage growth for the hospitality and transportation sectors.
