fountain known as the Pila, stroll through the plaza
and visit the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo (former
convent), and then go down to the pier where you can board a boat to make the
fascinating trip through the impressive Cañón del Sumidero. This canyon site offers beautiful natural scenery
where you can admire marvelous geological formations, cliffs and waterfalls
until you reach the ecotourist park located at the canyon bottom, an ideal place for horse
riding, free-gliding along a cable or rappelling. Following the highway that rises to Los Altos, in just
45 minutes you will arrive at San Cristóbal de las
Casas, a magical town that will captivate you with
its charm. With a cool climate, the city beckons you to stroll
its streets and discover the endless churches and colonial monuments. You can
stay in one of its beautiful hotels set in an antique home and go through the
tourist area that begin near the Arco del Carmen and runs until the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo. In your first stretch you will
find, apart from the coloring of its typical architecture, a wide variety of
cafés where you can observe the melting pot culture of its inhabitants as well
as the beautiful shops of amber. Upon
arrive at the main plaza of the tourist zone, you will hit the Palacio
Municipal (City Hall) and continue until you finish at the atrium of the
Cathedral with its magnificent ceiling of precious woods. From there you can continue to the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo and be surprised with the colors
of handmade textiles done by indigenous natives that overrun the length of the
place. The façade of this religious building and the museum inside the convent
will tell you the history of this place in the mountains. A few more blocks to
the south and you will arrive at the market, where you will be thrust forth
into a sensory experience without equal thanks to its wide variety of smells
and colors that float through the environment.
Continue to the south and visit the Museo de la Medicina
Maya (Mayan
Medicine Museum)
and stroll the beautiful narrow streets such as the Cola del Diablo in El Cerrillo, an antique neighborhood of blacksmiths. Making your way to the west, you can visit
the Casa Museo Na Bolom (Na
Bolom House Museum), legacy of Franz and Gertrude Blom, the couple that dedicated their lives to studying and
helping the Lacandones
(native Indian group) in the beginning of the last century and who resided in
this beautiful home. Just 207

mi) along Highway 199, you will find Palenque, an extraordinary Mayan city hidden
in the jungle. If you dare to tackle a wonderful tour through this
archeological zone, visit its temples and buildings to get caught up in its
