Route to Real de Catorce ? Departing from San Luis Potosi, take Highway 57 for about 190 km (118 mi) north to Matehuala. In Matehuala you can visit the Templo de la Concepcion, a gray stone Romanesque edifice that bears resemblance to St. Joseph?s Church in Lyon, France. From Matehuala, take Highway 62 for 36 km (22 mi) to the Real de Catorce turnoff, which is 247 km (153 mi) north of San Luis Potosi. This ghost town, full of magic and legends, was an old mining site. To enter the town, you?ll have to pass through the narrow 2-km (1.2-mi) Ogarrio tunnel. In Real de Catorce you can visit the baroque-style Iglesia de la Purisima Concepcion. You also can check out the town?s cockfighting arena, which has stone seats. Currently, it is used to hold cockfights and artistic events. Other attractions include the Plaza de Toros (a bullfighting arena) and the Panteon Municipal (City Cemetery) on Zaragoza Street, which is one of the town?s oldest constructions.
