SURROUNDING AREAS, TOURING AND NOTABLE PLACES

Touring the Pulque Haciendas ? Departing from Pachuca, take Highway 105 south for 26 km (16 mi) in the direction of Ciudad Sahagun until you reach the town of Zempoala. During your visit here you can check out the Todos Los Santos church and the main plaza, which has a fountain with an octagonal curb. The square is surrounded by beautiful examples of architecture from the Porfirian era. When you?re ready to leave, take the same highway in the direction of Ciudad Sahagun and head 40 km (25 mi) south to Emiliano Zapata, where you?ll find the Hacienda of San Lorenzo. Here you?ll see a neoclassical chapel with a pair of towers. Next, take the Highway 136 turnoff for 6 km (4 mi) to the Hacienda of San Bartolome Tepetates, a construction with a large patio, a chapel, granaries, a tienda de raya (once a hacienda-owned store) and the original fortified towers. Continue along Highway 136 to reach Apan, the pulque capital of the world. There you?ll find the Hacienda of Chimalpa, which has two 18th-century chapels. For the last stop on the route take Highway 115 to the Apan turnoff, then head 17 km (10 mi) until you reach the Hacienda of Santiago Tetlapayac. This beautiful hacienda has been used as a location for various film shoots. The hacienda has a large house, a tinacal (a room to produce pulque) and a chapel with one of the most beautiful baroque facades in the state.

El Chico National Park ? Located 24 km (15 mi) north of Pachuca, south of the town of Mineral del Chico. This was Mexico?s first national forest reserve. Here visitors will see beautiful mountain landscapes and valleys with curious rock formations dubbed La Muela (The Molar), El Fistol (The Tie Pin) and La Botella (The Bottle). The park also has high cliffs with truly incredible lookout points.

Ex-Hacienda of San Miguel Regla ? Located 29 km (18 mi) northeast of Pachuca and 1 km (a half a mile) from Huasca de Ocampo. This architectural monument is surrounded by ponds and pine and fir forests. It was once the property of Pedro Romero de Terreros, the Count of Regla. Currently, it operates as a luxurious hotel where you can relax or enjoy an unforgettable honeymoon. In the surrounding areas you can check out interesting attractions, such as the Prismas Basalticos (basaltic rock formations) and the Capilla de la Virgen Negra (Chapel of the Black Virgin).
