SURROUNDING AREAS, TOURING AND NOTABLE PLACES

Touring Mazatlan?s Surrounding Areas ? Departing from Mazatlan, take Highway 15-D in the direction of Culiacan, the state capital of Sinaloa, which is 224 km (139 mi) north. There you can visit the Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (the city?s cathedral), an important 19th-century architectural monument located near the Plaza Alvaro Obregon. You can also visit interesting museums such as the Regional de Sinaloa, which has numerous Nahuatl ceramic pieces on display from the Valley of Culiacan, and the Arte de Sinaloa, which houses works of famous Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera, Dr. Atl and Jose Clemente Orozco, among others. You can also drop in on the botanical garden in the Centro de Ciencias, which displays the second largest meteorite in the world, and Parque Culiacan 87, which has a manmade lake, sports facilities and exciting rides.

Continuing north, 221 km (137 mi) ahead you?ll arrive at Los Mochis, one of the nation?s largest agricultural regions, thanks to its privileged location and the fertile valleys of El Fuerte and El Carrizo. At this city, you can visit Parque Sinaloa (Sinaloa Park), a botanical garden (a private collection of sugar mill owner Benjamin F. Johnston), and El Museo Regional del Valle de Fuerte, where you can tour a sugar mill and learn about the importance of the industry for the local economy. The museum also has interesting facts about the growth of Los Mochis. While you?re there you should also visit the Plazuela 27 de Septiembre to check out the Sagrado Corazon de Jesus church, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and Plaza Solidaridad, a popular gathering spot for locals. About 26 km (16 mi) from this city, you?ll find the Topolobampo Bay, where you can take a boat out on the water and head to Farallon Island, which has a beautiful natural environment inhabited by seals, birds and other species.
