SURROUNDING AREAS, TOURING AND NOTABLE PLACES

In the surrounding areas of Los Cabos, you?ll find magnificent places to explore the natural environment of the Baja California Peninsula region.

Touring in Los Cabos ? The tour begins in the heart of San Jose del Cabo, where you can spot different bird, turtle and marine mammal species at the San Jose del Cabo Estuary. This place has more than 150 bird species and a wide variety of indigenous plants. It?s also a great place to do some kayaking. From there, take Mijares Boulevard and continue on to the Palacio Municipal, which was built at the end of the 19th century. Nearby is the main square, a pretty and picturesque spot to enjoy an ice cream made with seasonal fruits. Continue the tour along Alvaro Obregon Avenue, where you can visit the San Jose Church, an old mission. After that, go to Mauricio Castro Street and follow the signs that will lead you to Parque de las Ballenas, which is near the sea wall. There you?ll find the highway that goes to Cabo San Lucas and you?ll pass the golf courses that lie off the coast of the Sea of Cortez until you reach El Arco. At El Arco, you?ll be able to spot seals and sea lions and do some scuba diving or check out the cascades. As the day winds down, La Playa del Amor is a good place to take in the sunset. If the light of day still permits, visit the Old Lighthouse, a construction built in 1890 and located at Cabo Falso, which is 19 kilometers from Cabos San Lucas. When you return to Cabo San Lucas, you?ll find excellent restaurants to have dinner. The cuisine of Los Cabos is a tasty offering that blends creativity and rich flavors.

Touring near Los Cabos ? Begin in Los Cabos, and from there, head to the town of Todos Santos, located 78 kilometers (48 miles) north of Los Cabos. There you?ll see old colorful houses surrounding the Nuestra Senora del Pilar Mission, one of the area?s main architectural monuments. If you walk south, you can take a stroll along the beach, where you can also do some fishing. In these parts, fishermen catch skipjack, bass, snapper and shark. You can also take a boat and visit the famous sea lion colonies off the coast of Todos Santos. When you return to land, pass through Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to continue your journey along the highway that heads north toward the towns of Los Barriles and Buenavista, where you can take a refreshing swim in the ocean or go for a stroll along the beach. Nearby is La Playita, where they prepare some of the region?s tastiest shrimp and fish dishes. After that, take Route 9 northeast and take the Highway 1 turnoff until you see a round structure called The Tropic of Cancer Monument, which marks the exact spot where this tropic crosses through Mexican territory. As you continue in the direction of La Paz, stop off to visit el Museo del la Ballena (The Whale Museum), where they have some fascinating exhibits. The museum is located on Manuel Altamirano Street. As you approach La Paz, the state capital of Baja California Sur, you?ll be offered a view of the beautiful beaches. La Paz was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez. Once you are there, take a boat from Puerto de Pichilingue to Isla Espiritu Santo, a perfect place to scuba dive amid hammerhead sharks and beautiful coral. When you return to La Paz, try to spend some time there ? the city has so much to offer!
