OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
In Tlaxcala?s surrounding areas you?ll find excellent natural
settings where you can do exercise, go hiking, mountain bike riding and
climbing.
Parque Nacional La Malinche (Malinche National
Park). Located 26 km (16 mi) east of Tlaxcala
and 13 km (8 mi) west of Huamantla off Highway 136.
This is the city?s main ecological reserve due to the abundant coniferous
forest that covers most of its 45,711 hectares (112,906 acres). In this park
you?ll find the Matlacoeyatl Volcano, or La Malinche, which is 4,461 meters (14,721 feet) above sea
level. It is the sixth highest peak in Mexico. This spot has designated areas
where you can take nature hikes or go mountain bike riding, as well as sections
where you can participate in cross-country races or go camping. At the
foothills of the volcano you?ll find numerous cliffs and rocks where you can do
climbing and rappelling.
Las Vigas.
Located 60 km (37 mi) northwest of Tlaxcala off
Highway 119 in the direction of Tlaxco. At this place
you?ll find a huge cliff known as La Muñeca (The
Doll), which has ideal walls for rappelling.
Acopinalco del Peñon. Located 50 km northeast of Tlaxcala off Highway 119. This place has rock formations
such as the Picacho del Aguila and the Peña del Rosario,
considered two of the region?s best spots for climbing.
Coaxomulco. Located 15 km (9 mi) east of
Tlaxcala. At this place you can visit Cuatlapanga
Hill, which lies 2,900 meters (9,570 feet) above sea level and has steep cliffs
of high difficulty level, making it ideal for climbing.
