EARLIEST 16TH-CENTURY MONASTERIES ON THE SLOPES
OF POPOCATÉPETL
Fourteen
Christian monasteries stand on the slopes of the Popocatepetl, a dormant
volcano southeast of Mexico City. They are
excellent examples of the architectural style adopted by the first
missionaries– Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinians–who tried to convert the
native Indians to Christianity in the early 16th century.
